Leather pants, tight clothes cause infections like UTI in women? Find out how

New Delhi: Leather pants indeed look attractive, but little do people realise that a chic outfit comes at a cost. Despite being a natural fabric that is breathable at least to look at, it is far from it. On the contrary, leather trousers create a moist and warm environment allowing bacteria to thrive, which can cause fungal infections. Doctors say that this form of fashion may even raise the risk of urinary tract infections, especially when one is more prone to them. And to make matters worse, especially in the case of women, these put pressure on the bladder and urethra thereby worsening the urge to urinate, even before the bladder is full. But what is it that makes them risky for women?

How do tight clothes raise infection risk?

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Neerja Goel, Senior Gynecologist at Sharda Hospital, explained how leather pants and tight clothes affect infection risk in women.

“Women who wear tight clothing, such as leather trousers, may be more susceptible to infections and may experience symptoms of illnesses such as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Tight clothing can produce a warm, humid atmosphere that encourages the growth of bacteria and raises the risk of infections, including UTIs and vaginal infections. Hormonal influences and dietary practices are two other factors that may contribute to increased GERD symptoms in women,” said Dr Goel.

Women are more likely than males to suffer from GERD, and common symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, and belching. Women may be more prone to these symptoms, in part because of hormonal variations that impact the motility and sensitivity of the esophagus. According to certain research, women are more likely than men to get GERD, especially as they get older or during the hormonal shifts connected to menopause. The symptoms associated with infections from tight clothing may include vaginal discharge, itching, and pelvic pain. In some cases, tight pants syndrome may be mistaken for various conditions such as STDs or gastrointestinal disorders.

“Tight jeans are one of the precipitating factors for Candidial ( fungal ) infection for which one has to wear loose clothes at night and get a Pap test if married 2-3 yearly. If any type of infection is found one has to use Cansoft pessary at night x 6 and eat Tab Forcan 150 mg for 3 days. Along with this practice perineal hygiene and always keep the perineal area dry,” the expert concluded.
