New Delhi: Chelsea are inching closer to signing Liam Delap after agreeing to trigger a £30m release clause for the Ipswich striker. The Blues, who won the UEFA Conference League on Wednesday, have moved quickly to land the in-demand forward, who has also attracted interest from Manchester United and Newcastle.

According to a report in Sky Sports, Chelsea are close to agreeing on the terms with Ipswich on triggering the £30m release clause. Despite the relegation of the Tractor Boys, Delap has attracted interest from top clubs including Man United and Chelsea, but the striker has chosen to join the London club.

Chelsea are aiming to add more depth to their squad before leaving for the United States for their Club World Cup opener in Atlanta on June 16.

Delap consider Delap deal a bargain

Delap, who contributed 12 of the 33 goals scored by Ipswich this season, is exactly the kind of profile Chelsea are looking to add to their squad and consider the deal a bargain.

The 22-year-old English forward has worked with Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca and recruitment co-director Joe Shields at Manchester City.

It will be a big blow to the transfer plans of Man United, who were thought to be the frontrunners for Delap’s signing for a long time. The Red Devils are aiming to undergo a massive overhaul to revive their fortunes after a dismal campaign, which saw them finish 15th – their worst finish in the Premier League era – and runner-up to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.

Ruben Amorim’s side has already agreed a deal with Wolves to sign Brazilian winger Matheus Cunha. The 20-time champions acted quickly to beat competition from top clubs to lure Cunha to Old Trafford.
