New Delhi: A lifeguard garnered all the attention at the La Defense Arena on Sunday during the women’s 100 breaststroke preliminary race. American swimmer Emma Weber’s cap sunk in the bottom of the pool, and someone had to retrieve it.
That’s when the lifeguard nearest to the area (of cap sinking in the pool) turned up. Present in his swimwear, the lifeguard dove in the pool to recollect the cap from the bottom. He received the loudest cheers both times – when he went inside the pool and when he came outside with the cap.

According to a report from CNN, the name of the lifeguard is unknown because the person didn’t allow his name to be revealed or reported in order to focus on his duties for the remaining part of the competition, as mentioned by a Paris Games spokesperson.
“This situation is common at swimming competitions. As the lifeguards are the only people wearing swimwear, apart from the athletes, a request may be made to fetch an item at the bottom of the pool prior to the next race. In this case, the request was made to the lifeguard closest to the item,” the spokesperson told CNN.
NBC Sports, the official broadcasters of Paris Olympics in the USA, dubbed the lifeguard as ‘Bob the Cap Catcher’ after the professional earned plenty of cheers from the crowd.
How did Emma Weber performed?
Emma Weber entered the pool on Sunday to participate in the preliminary race for the 100 breaststroke. The 20-year-old American clocked 1:07.65s to finish at eighth spot. It wasn’t enough for the University of Virgina athlete to qualify for the semifinal stage.
Emma Weber stunned 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Lydia Jacoby in the 100 breaststroke at the 2024 US Olympic trails held last month in Indianapolis.
