New Delhi: Monday night proved to be a historic moment for Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal as he was officially named the latest Golden Boy winner, following in the footsteps of his club teammates Pedri and Gavi.
The 17-year-old’s impressive performances for both club and country have left the world stunned by his skills, composure, and maturity at such a young age. Yamal received the Golden Boy trophy on Sunday before Barcelona’s game against Leganes, as he couldn’t make the trip to Turin to attend the ceremony in person. The evening turned out to be a double celebration for Barcelona as the club bagged both the Golden Boy and Golden Girl awards. Yamal won the former while Barca Femeni’s Vicky Lopez grabbed the latter. Adding to the occasion, club legend and global football icon Lionel Messi shared a heartfelt congratulatory message for both Yamal and Vicky on his social media platforms.
“Lamine, Vicky: this award is the result not only of talent but of hard work and sacrifice. It is a pride that they are part of Messi+10. Congratulations and keep it up!” Messi wrote on Instagram.
Over the last few months, Messi has been increasingly vocal about his love for Barcelona breaking the silence following his departure from the club. In a recent interview, Messi even shared his plans to return to Catalonia in the later years of his life.
Interestingly, in another interview when Messi was asked about which young Barcelona player reminded him the most of his style of play. Without hesitation he named the newly crowned Golden Boy, Lamine Yamal.
Messi said, “Well, I heard about Yamal without a doubt. It depends on him and other things as well to be consistent. But he is already part of the present and there is no doubt that he has a huge future ahead of him.”
