Liverpool and Everton condemn racist abuse of Abdoulaye Doucoure in Merseyside derby

New Delhi: Liverpool and Everton have both come forward to condemn the racist abuse directed towards midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure during Wednesday’s Merseyside derby at the Goodison with the game ending in a 2-2 draw. The 32-year-old was involved in a post-game confrontation.

The Toffees captain James Tarkowski equalised in seven minutes of the added time and that resulted in a big celebration during the final Merseyside game at Goodison Park. This irked Liverpool’s substitute Curtis Jones after Doucoure started celebrating in front of the Reds fans.

This resulted in both players being shown red cards by referee Michael Oliver and in the post, the final whistle even showed one to Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot who now faces a two-game ban. On Thursday the two clubs issued a joint statement that condemned the racist abuses directed at Doucoure and called the act “reprehensible”.

They further said that they would be working with the local police who are investigating to identify the miscreants who were responsible.

Doucoure later posted an image of himself celebrating and giving a tribute to the ground as Everton bids goodbye to Goodison this summer and will move to their new venue at Bramley-Moore Dock. Even the post received many racial slurs which prompted the club to note that any racist comment on the social media platform should be reported or highlighted.

Liverpool and Everton’s Premier League standings

While Liverpool remain at the top, the gap could have been nine points clear at the top had they won at Goodison Park. Liverpool recently crashed out of the FA Cup after losing to Plymouth, though they have reached the final of the EFL Cup. The Reds have played five games in a matter of two weeks, playing through four competitions. Their next Premier League fixture will see them face the 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

On the other hand, Everton are placed at 15th, level on points with West Ham and ten points ahead of the relegation zone. With David Moyes back leading the side, the Toffees have found a late resurgence in the season, winning thrice in the five games under the Scottish manager. The Toffees are set to face Crystal Palace on Saturday and will face Liverpool again on April 3rd at Anfield.

Following racist abuses made towards Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure during the last Merseyside derby at Goodison park, both the Toffees and Liverpool have issued a joint statement condemning the incident.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
