New Delhi: Former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexually assaulting footballer Jenni Hermoso. The verdict comes almost a year after Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips without her consent during Spain’s celebrations after winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup in August 2023. The incident sparked outrage globally and ignited discussions on sexism and consent in sports. Rubiales was acquitted of coercion but has been ordered to pay a fine of more than €10,000.
Additionally, he must stay at least 200 meters away from Hermoso and is prohibited from contacting her for a year. Prosecutors had initially sought a prison sentence of two and a half years—one year for sexual assault and 18 months for coercion. However, the court ruled that there was not enough evidence to prove he had pressured Hermoso into downplaying the incident. Three others former Spain women’s team head coach Jorge Vilda, ex-RFEF sporting director Albert Luque, and the federation’s former marketing chief Rubén Rivera were also cleared of coercion charges.
