Luis Suarez bids emotional farewell as Paraguay hold Uruguay in FIFA WC qualifier

New Delhi: Luis Suarez’s illustrious international career came to an emotional close at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, where Uruguay were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Paraguay in the 2026 South American World Cup qualifiers. The 37-year-old striker, who announced his retirement from international football earlier this week, leaves behind an unforgettable legacy after 17 glittering years representing his country.

Suarez, Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances, walked off the pitch for the final time with mixed emotions. Despite several attempts, including a powerful right-footed volley that hit the post after a brilliant cross from Facundo Pellistri in the first half, he couldn’t add a 70th goal to his tally.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were without their five key players from their starting line-up including Darwin Nunez who was suspended following an altercation with fans during the 2024 Copa America defeat to Colombia in July.

Paraguay also had their chances, with Miguel Almiron coming closest to scoring. However, a sharp save by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet kept the match goalless. Despite enjoying 65% possession Uruguay were unable to find the nets. About 24 fouls were committed during the rambling game.

In a heated match, four Uruguay players including Suarez were shown yellow cards.  Suarez’s career has often been marked by controversy, most notably his infamous ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup. This match provided a bittersweet end to his illustrious career. His fiery spirit, which has made him a controversial yet iconic figure was on full display in his final appearance for La Celeste.

Despite the emotional farewell, the former Barcelona and Liverpool star striker will now turn his focus to club football with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. He departs the international stage as one of Uruguay’s greatest-ever players, having led his nation to Copa America glory in 2011 and numerous World Cup campaigns.

The result leaves Uruguay in second place in the World Cup qualifiers standings with 14 points. They are just four points behind Argentina. With Suarez’s departure, Marcelo Bielsa will be looking to rebuild his attack as they face Venezuela next on Tuesday while Paraguay will take on Brazil.

As Uruguay moves forward, the void left by their greatest-ever striker will be felt but his influence on the next generation of players will linger for years to come.
