Mumbai: Mahashivratri, one of the most significant Hindu festivals, will be observed on February 26, 2025. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this auspicious occasion is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna. Devotees across India and beyond observe fasts, perform special prayers, and offer sacred bhog (offerings) to seek blessings from the deity. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were united in marriage, making it an especially sacred occasion for Shiva devotees.
Hindu scriptures suggest that observing Mahashivratri with devotion and offering specific items to Lord Shiva can bring prosperity, success, and divine blessings. Rituals include night-long vigils, temple visits, and offering bhog such as kheer, thandai, and Panchamrit to the deity. Many devotees also perform abhishekam (sacred bathing) of the Shivling using milk, water, honey, and holy substances to attain spiritual fulfilment.
