New Delhi: Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene on Sunday, October 13, returned as the head coach of IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, the franchise confirmed the development. This will mark the return of the 47-year-old in the core coaching staff of the five-time IPL winners. He was the head coach of MI from 2017 to 2022, the period in which the team won three titles.
He was elevated to the role of global head of cricket after MI expanded its brand across T20 franchise competitions in the world. Jayawardene has worked with different coaching staff at Mumbai Indians women’s team in Women’s Premier League (WPL), MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC), MI Emirates in the International League T20 (ILT20), and MI Cape Town in SA20 (South Africa) competitions. Barring MI Cape Town, all the franchises have earned a title so far in their respective tournaments.
“My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well,” Jayawardene said in a statement in a release issued by MI on its official website.
“Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to,” Jayawardene added.
Jayawardene will replace Mark Boucher as the head coach of MI after the team finished at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2024, having won four matches and lost 10 under the new captaincy of Hardik Pandya. Boucher was the one to replace the Sri Lankan cricket icon in 2023 and was in the position for two straight seasons.
