Melbourne: A passenger was arrested at Melbourne Airport on Thursday after leaving a stationary Jetstar airliner through an emergency exit, walking along the wing, and climbing down a jet engine to the tarmac.
Jetstar Flight JQ507, arriving from Sydney, was parked at a terminal gate when the man exited through the right-side emergency exit. This action deployed an inflatable slide, but the man chose to walk along the wing and descend via one of the Airbus A320’s engines.
Passenger Audrey Varghese reported that passengers screamed as the man displayed erratic behavior before opening the hatch. “The man was exhibiting some quite strange behavior,” Varghese told Melbourne Radio 3AW. “As soon as the plane started coming to a stop, he immediately got up and charged to where the emergency exit row is,” she added.
Australian Federal Police, alerted by Jetstar staff, arrested the man for “alleged aggressive behavior and breaching aircraft safety protocols,” according to a police statement. He was evaluated by paramedics and taken to a hospital for further assessment.
The police are continuing their investigation, with potential charges expected later. Melbourne Airport praised the ground crew for their swift response, noting there was no immediate danger to other passengers or staff.
