New Delhi: Manchester United have reportedly begun the second round of redundancies at the club under new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, days after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. United have started informing the staff who work at United’s Carrington training ground that they will lose their jobs in the second round of cuts at the club.

As per a BBC report, United are set to cut as many as 200 jobs in the second round of redundancies since Ratcliffe came on the board as a co-owner last year. The process of reducing the staff has been underway at the club for several weeks now, with many affected employees already informed about their future. However, some staff who work with the first team were informed only on Friday, the day after United’s defeat in the Europa League final.

The staff related to the first team were not informed earlier to ensure the team’s preparations for the Europa League final were not disrupted. United lost 1-0 against Spurs in Bilbao to miss out on a chance to redeem their shambolic season with a trophy. Brennan Johnson’s scrappy goal in the 42nd minute helped Spurs beat United in the summit clash to end a 17-year-long major trophy drought.

As per the BBC, the morale at United is low following the club’s 1-0 defeat in the final, considering the timing of the job cuts, which come immediately after the Europa League final defeat. Employees United’s medical, sports science, and scouting departments are likely to be on the receiving end in the latest round of job cuts at the club.

United sacked around 250 employees in the first round of redundancies after Ratcliffe bought a minority stake in the club last year and took over the football operations. United also took up a series of cost-cutting measures, which involved stopping free meals for the club staff and replacing them with fruit, and removing former manager Sir Alex Ferguson from an ambassadorial role, which cost the club 2 million pounds annually.

Manchester United hit new lows in woeful season

Manchester United have endured one of their worst-ever campaigns in the ongoing 2024-25 season. While they lost the Europa League final to a struggling Tottenham Hotspurs after remaining unbeaten throughout the competition, United are currently at the 16th spot on the Premier League table with just 39 points from 37 matches.

The Red Devils have lost a staggering 18 matches in the Premier League this season, while winning only 10. They are currently on an eight-match winless streak and are set for their worst-ever finish since the club was relegated from the English top flight in 1974. Though the United board remains firmly behind manager Ruben Amorim, the road ahead looks challenging for United as they aim to return to top again.

Manchester United are reportedly set to sack up to 200 employees as they begin second round of redundancies, immediately after the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
