Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher accused of misconduct following Brentford clash

New Delhi: Manchester United’s first-team coach, Darren Fletcher, has been charged by the Football Association (FA) with misconduct following his side’s 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford. The FA claims that Fletcher behaved in a “confrontational and improper manner” and directed “abusive and insulting language” at the officials during the half-time interval on 19 October. Fletcher has a deadline of 29 October to address these allegations.

The incident reportedly stemmed from frustrations over United’s defender Matthijs de Ligt, who was forced to leave the pitch three times due to a head injury that required treatment. De Ligt’s absence proved costly as Brentford took the opportunity to score through Ethan Pinnock, leaving United’s coaching staff fuming. Manager Erik ten Hag and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy, also visibly angered by the situation, received yellow cards for protesting against referee Samuel Barrott’s decision.

According to reports, Fletcher, who was observing the game from the press box alongside United’s analysts, made his way to the tunnel just before half-time to confront the officials. His response mirrored the anger felt by the United bench, who believed that the decision to keep De Ligt off the field left them unfairly exposed during the corner that led to Brentford’s goal. The FA’s statement suggests Fletcher’s exchange with officials crossed the line of acceptable conduct, leading to the charge.

This incident marks the latest in a series of misconduct charges across the Premier League this season. Wolves’ sporting director, Matt Hobbs, was charged recently for confronting officials after their defeat to Manchester City, while Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis received a five-match stadium ban for inappropriate behaviour directed towards officials after his side’s loss to Fulham.

Appointed as United’s technical director in 2021, Fletcher has since shifted into a coaching role under Erik ten Hag, following the appointment of Jason Wilcox as technical director this summer. Known for his 342 appearances with the club, Fletcher’s passion for United has been evident in his dedication to the coaching staff, though the recent charge adds an unexpected challenge to his role. The coming weeks will reveal whether Fletcher will contest the FA’s decision or accept any disciplinary action.
