Marcus Rashford misses out as Lee Carsley names his first squad as England’s interim manager

New Delhi: After guiding the U21s to the UEFA European U-21 Championship last year, manager Lee Carsley has slowly been making a name for himself in the International management circuit. His success with the U21 side saw him being approached by the Republic of Ireland to become their manager but he decided to reject their advances and continue with the U21s. His loyalty was repaid on 9th August 2024, when the Irishman was appointed the interim manager of the England national team.

His appointment is currently for September’s UEFA Nations League fixtures but could remain in the hotseat throughout autumn, while the FA continues its process of finding a new permanent head coach. The Three Lions take on the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on September 7 and face Finland at Wembley on September 10 and Carsely has announced his squad for those games.

He decided to call up a few names that have played under him in the U21 setup in his first squad as England manager. Six players who won the UEFA European U21 championship with Lee Carsley in July 2023 have been called up by the new England boss for September’s UEFA Nations League fixtures. Three of these six players haven’t made their first-team debut yet and could be in line for their debut next month.

Lee Carsley has named six players from his U21 European Championship winning team in his first senior England squad:

Former Manchester United academy product and current LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes, Chelsea’s Noni Madueke, who’s fresh off from scoring his first-ever career hattrick against Wolves this past weekend, and current Nottingham Forest talisman Morgan Gibbs-White, all were a part of the U21 championship-winning squad and they have all been called-up by Carsley for next month’s fixtures.

Manchester’s duo of Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire, both of whom failed to make the UEFA Euro 2024 squad have been called up by the Irishman while Newcastle right-back Tino Livramento, who played under Carsley in the U21 squad has also been given a call-up. Luke Shaw and Jude Bellingham, both of whom played in the UEFA Euro 2024 final for the Three Lions miss out on account of being injured.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney, Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, and Southampton-bound Aaron Ramsdale, all of whom were a part of Gareth Southgate’s UEFA Euro 2024 squad, haven’t been included in the squad for the upcoming fixtures and this could be down to the fact that none of them have played a single minute of Premier League football in the new season.

Toney’s future at Brentford continues to be up in the air, with the striker being linked to Chelsea and Al-Ahli which made Thomas Frank leave him out of his matchday squads. Ramsdale has become Arsenal’s back-up to David Raya since last season which leaves him with no minutes in the league till now while Walker has been given an extended break by Pep Guardiola following his long summer with the national team.

Here’s a look at the full squad that was announced by Lee Carsley for the games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Goalkeepers:  Jordan Pickford (Everton), Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Nick Pope (Newcastle United)

Defenders: John Stones (Manchester City), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Tino Livramento (Newcastle).

Midfielders: Phil Foden (Manchester City), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Angel Gomes (Lille), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Noni Madueke (Chelsea) Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

The current England U21 manager was named as the interim head coach of the Three Lions following the resignation of Gareth Southgate on the heels of UEFA Euro 2024.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
