Mumbai: Masik Durgashtami, an important observance in the Hindu calendar, will be celebrated this year on 5 April 2025. Observed monthly on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of the Shukla Paksha, this sacred occasion is dedicated to Goddess Durga, the divine embodiment of strength and courage. On this day, devotees offer special prayers and observe a day-long fast to seek the blessings of the Goddess.
As per the Hindu Panchang, the Ashtami Tithi begins at 8:12 PM on 4 April and ends at 7:26 PM on 5 April. Since Hindu traditions typically follow the Udaya Tithi (sunrise-based date), Masik Durgashtami will be observed on 5 April. The vrat (fast) and puja rituals are believed to usher in positivity, prosperity, and protection against negativity.
Masik Durgashtami Puja Vidhi
On Masik Durgashtami, devotees are advised to wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. The home temple should be thoroughly cleaned, and Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges) is sprinkled to purify the space. An idol or picture of Goddess Durga is then placed on a puja platform, followed by her ceremonial bathing with Gangajal.
Devotees offer red chunari (scarf), red flowers, akshat (unbroken rice), and items for Solah Shringar (sixteen adornments) to the Goddess. Offerings of fruits and sweets are made, and worship concludes with the recitation of the Durga Chalisa and an aarti. Those observing the fast typically consume only fruits and milk-based items throughout the day.

Masik Durgashtami holds deep spiritual significance. Goddess Durga is revered as the symbol of divine energy, protection, and fearlessness. By observing this fast, devotees believe they receive her divine grace, which brings peace, prosperity, and inner strength. It is said to shield one from negative energies, enemies, and evil influences.
The vrat is especially considered auspicious for women, as it is believed to enhance marital happiness and grant good fortune. Regular observance of Masik Durgashtami not only fosters spiritual well-being but also promotes mental peace and emotional resilience.
