New Delhi: Danish badminton coach Mathias Boe announced retirement from coaching career on Saturday (August 3). The move comes after World No.3 men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty crashed out of the Paris Olympics 2024.
Satwik and Chirag, who were considered as one of the medal contenders from the Indian contingent, lost to South Korea’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-13, 14-21, 16-21 despite a valiant fight in the men’s doubles quarterfinals.
Boe joined the Indian badminton pair as their coach ahead of the Tokyo Games and their alliance saw the shuttlers grow by leaps and bounds. Satwik and Chirag won gold medals in Commonwealth Games (2022) and Asian Games (2023) and bronze medal in the World Championships (2021).
The 2012 London Olympics silver medalist (in men’s doubles) took to his Instagram account to call his time with the Indian duo and mentioned that he won’t further continue with coaching for any other shuttler.
“For me, my coaching days ends here, I’m not going to continue in India or anywhere else, for now at least. I have spent too much time in a badminton hall and it’s also pretty stressful to be a coach, I’m a tired old man,” Mathias Boe wrote in his lengthy caption on Instagram.
Mathias Boe has a heartfelt message for Satwik-Chirag
Following their Asian Games gold in October last year, Satwik and Chirag claimed World No.1 spot in men’s doubles, charting their major success under Boe. The continental success bloomed hopes for the Indian pair to finish at the podium in Paris but they couldn’t capitalise on a first-game advantage against Korean rivals Chia and Soh. Boe had a emotional note for his tutees.
“I know the feeling all too well myself. Pushing yourself to the limit every day, to be in the best shape of your life, and then things doesn’t go as you would have hoped for. I know you guys are gutted, I know how much you wanted to bring a medal back to India, but this time it wasn’t meant to be,” Boe said.
The former Danish shuttler encouraged his wards to put their head up as they battled lot of challenges in their journey. He showed faith in the best Indian men’s doubles pair to continue their success.
“You have everything to be proud of, how hard you have worked in this Olympics camp, battling injuries, even taken injections to reduce the pain, that is dedication, that is passion and that is a lot of Heart. You have won so much over the past years and you are going to win so much more in the future,” Boe wrote.
