New Delhi: A woman’s life goes through various transitions ranging from physical to mental health. One of most drastic change that is seen in women are during their menopausal phase. Menopause marks a significant life transition for women, often accompanied by a range of physical and emotional changes.

Consultant Psychiatrist and Director at Psymate Noida shared with News9, “A decline in estrogen and other hormones during menopause can lead to noticeable shifts in mental health, affecting mood, cognition, and emotional well-being.”

Recognising the Symptoms

Mental health challenges during menopause commonly include mood swings, anxiety, depression, and irritability. Dr Darshi said, “Some women experience increased emotional sensitivity, feelings of sadness, or a loss of motivation. Sleep problems, such as insomnia or disrupted rest due to night sweats, can heighten emotional strain, leaving women feeling fatigued and less able to handle stress. Cognitive symptoms, including forgetfulness or a foggy mind, are also frequent concerns during this period.”

Strategies for Managing Mental Health

According to Dr Darshi, “Taking a comprehensive approach to mental health during menopause can help alleviate these symptoms. Regular physical exercise, particularly activities like walking or swimming, can enhance mood and reduce anxiety. Practices such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises offer stress relief and promote emotional balance. For women with more severe symptoms, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be considered under medical guidance.”

“Psychological support through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can also be an effective way to manage anxiety or depression related to menopause. Additionally, a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, along with minimizing alcohol and caffeine, can contribute to improved mental clarity and emotional well-being.”

While menopause is a natural life stage, its impact on mental health is significant. With proactive steps and support, women can experience better mental and emotional balance during this transition.
