Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024: 4 signs that you are ignoring intimate care

New Delhi: Women go through around 350 periods in their lifetime and many of us may feel that they know about the actual dos and don’ts during this time of the month. In India, there have been many myths related to menstrual health and hardly people had any conversation about it but now with time, women have started opening up about their intimate care and hygiene.

According to some studies, intravaginal practices are often linked to harmful and unintended side effects. The risk of reproductive tract infections is on the rise and this can increase the cases of other serious health conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage and preterm birth. Poor menstrual hygiene plays a major role in this. According to Dr Shruti Ugran, Consultant Gyn Endoscopist and Minimal Invasive Gynaecologist (MIG), Motherhood Hospitals, Kharghar, Mumbai, some common or early signs may indicate that you are ignoring poor intimate care:

• UTI (Urinary tract infection): Women are most like to get UTIs during their menstrual cycle. It is essential to clean the genital area from front to back after using the washroom, to avoid the risk of developing Urinary tract infection.

• Yeast infection: It is common to develop a yeast infection, especially during menstrual cycle. This is caused by the growth of candida fungi due to high estrogen levels. Hence, it becomes necessary to wash your hands after changing pads to reduce the risk of getting UTIs.

• Bacterial infection: Using dirty sanitary pads, or using one pad throughout the day can cause bacterial infection which can cause discomfort. Bacterial infection can cause rashes, itching, and burning sensations. Therefore it is important to maintain proper hygiene and use sanitized pads or tampons during periods.

• Reproductive health issues: There is a higher chance of increasing the risk of getting reproductive health issues like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or endometriosis during periods. The primary reason behind this could be poor menstrual hygiene, making it essential to prioritize hygiene during periods.
