‘Milaf Cola,’ World’s first date-based drink to substitute Coca-Cola in Saudi Arabia

Mumbai: Saudi Arabia has introduced a new drink, Milaf Cola, which is set to rival well-established brands like Coca-Cola. Unlike traditional sodas made from corn syrup or cane sugar, Milaf Cola is crafted from dates, making it the world’s first cola made with this fruit.

The drink was unveiled at the Riyadh Date Festival by Bander Al-Qahtani, CEO of Thurath Al-Madina (a Saudi Public Investment Fund subsidiary), alongside Saudi Agriculture Minister Abdulrahman Al-Fadley.

Promoted as a healthier alternative to regular carbonated drinks, Milaf Cola contains no added sugar. It is made from locally sourced dates, supporting environmental sustainability in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which promotes the use of local products and seeks to diversify the economy and culture. Given that Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s largest exporters of dates, this product aims to showcase the fruit’s versatility beyond traditional snacks.

The price of Milaf Cola is 71.95 Saudi Riyals according to the Lulu Hypermarket website, which is equivalent to Rs 1,622.

Additionally, there are indications that more date-based drinks, such as energy drinks, may be introduced to cater to the global market. Amid increasing calls for boycotts of US companies seen as supporting Israel, including Coca-Cola, Milaf Cola could serve as a healthier, more sustainable alternative. This trend follows the rise of other cola alternatives like Gaza Cola and V7’s Super Soda Cola, as sales of Coca-Cola reportedly declined in countries like Egypt due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Thurath Al-Madina aims to increase Milaf Cola’s production and make it available worldwide.

With its mix of health benefits, environmental sustainability, and unique charm, Milaf Cola has the potential to revolutionise the global soda industry and build a loyal customer base among health-conscious drinkers. While it’s still early to assess whether this date-based beverage can compete with established cola giants, its debut has already paved the way for success.
