Dhaka: Minorities in Bangladesh have opened a monitoring cell amid unrest in Dhaka after several reports claiming that temples were attacked in Dhaka surfaced forcing devotees to seek shelter.
Hindus, Buddhists and Christian communities released the phone numbers of leaders saying people can contact them and can also inform them regarding riots.
“The Minorities Unity Council of Bangladesh has released contact information for leaders of Mandirs, churches, and Buddhist temples. Members of the Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian communities are encouraged to reach out to these leaders and report any incidents of unrest or violence,” it said.
Student Protect Temples and Other Places
The ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’ has urged all participants in the student-citizen uprising and the general public to establish ‘committees for communal harmony and protection of state assets’ on a ward-by-ward basis nationwide. In response to this, students have been holding overnight vigils at various locations to safeguard Hindu and other minority community places of worship across the country.
In a video accessed by Republic, students were seen protecting the Dhakeshwari Hindu temple.
The South Asian country has been under turmoil for the past few days where reports claimed that Hindus in the country are being attacked. A fresh round of clashes erupted in Bangladesh over the weekend after nearly 100 people were killed while hundreds of others suffered injuries after clashes broke out between protesters and ruling party Awami League’s supporters.
On Monday, ISKCON and Kali temples in Dhaka were attacked forcing devotees to seek shelter. Furthermore, an Indian cultural centre was also vandalised by a mob in the city and four Hindu temples suffered “minor” damages across the country as per eyewitnesses.
Reportedly, two Hindu councillors were shot dead however no confirmation on the same could be done.
A video also surfaced on social media where a Hindu home was attacked by a mob trying to break the gate in Noakhali.
In the video, the terrified woman was heard saying “bhagwan, Bhagwan,” while crying.
