Missing Chhath Puja status: Share the festival’s spirit while away

Mumbai: Chhath Puja, a significant Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God, is being celebrated with immense devotion from November 5 to November 8, 2024, across India and Nepal. This four-day festival involves a series of rituals focused on prayers for health, prosperity, and well-being, and holds deep cultural and spiritual importance, particularly for the communities in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

The festival is observed twice a year—during Chaitra (Chaiti Chhath) and Kartik, with Kartik Chhath being the more prominent one for devotees. This year, Kartik Chhath begins on November 5 with ‘Nahay Khay’ and ends on November 8 with ‘Usha Arghya.’

The celebrations begin on November 5 with a ritual bath and a meal of rice, pumpkin, and dal, symbolising purification and spiritual cleansing during Nahay Khay. Devotees prepare themselves for the days ahead with deep commitment.

November 6, the second day of the festival, is dedicated to ‘Kharna,’ when devotees observe a full-day fast, broken after sunset with a modest meal of rice pudding and chapati.

The main rituals continue on November 7 with ‘Sandhya Arghya,’ an evening offering to the setting sun, where devotees gather by water bodies for this important ritual. The festival concludes on November 8 with ‘Usha Arghya,’ the morning offering to the rising sun, followed by ‘Parana,’ which marks the end of the fast, completing the festival on a joyous note.

Chhath Puja is one of the most significant festivals in Indian culture, celebrated with immense devotion and reverence. The rituals involve fasting, bathing in holy rivers, and offering prayers to the Sun God, making it a deeply spiritual and community-focused event.

It is a deeply spiritual festival celebrated with great devotion, especially by people belonging to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand states and surrounding regions. It is a time for family gatherings, offering prayers to the Sun God, and performing sacred rituals by the banks of rivers.

While the festival brings families and communities together, those living away from their hometowns often feel the absence of the celebrations around them. Luckily, technology allows us to stay connected and share in the festivities, no matter the distance.
