New Delhi: With a huge focus on development of eastern states and connecting the region with new railway routes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet on Friday approved eight big railway projects with a total outlay of Rs 24,657 crore.
The Modi Cabinet approved eight new line projects of Indian Railways which would be important for providing connectivity, facilitating ease of travel, reducing logistics costs, reducing oil imports and reducing CO2 emissions. The proposed projects is aimed at improving logistical efficiency by connecting the unconnected areas and enhancing transportation networks, resulting in streamlined supply chains and accelerated economic growth.
The projects are aimed at bringing comprehensive development in the areas which will enhance their employment/ self-employment opportunities. The projects are expected to be completed by 2030-31 would generate direct employment of approximately 3 crore man-days during construction.
The 8 railway projects would cover 14 districts in the seven states of Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana and West Bengal. The projects would ensure expansion of the existing network of Indian Railways by 900 kilometers.
The projects would include constriction of 64 new stations, providing connectivity to approximately six aspirational districts, including East Singhbhum, Bhadadri Kothagudem, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada. 510 villages and about 40 lakh population will be connected with the new railway network.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site Ajanta Caves will be connected to the Indian Railways network, which will provide convenience to a large number of tourists.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) stated that the new Railway lines would ensure smooth and fast transportation of commodities such as agriculture products, fertiliser, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, bauxite, limestone, aluminium powder, granite, ballast, containers etc.
“The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 143 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum). The Railways being environment friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimizing logistics cost of the country, reduce oil import (32.20 Crore Litres) and lower CO2 emissions (0.87 MillionTonnes) which is equivalent to plantation of 3.5 crore trees,” the statement read.
The projects are a result of PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which will provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services.
