New Delhi: Liverpool have been crowned champions of the 2024-25 Premier League, securing their record-equalling 20th English top-flight title with a resounding 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. The triumph in Arne Slot’s debut season as manager brings the Reds level with Manchester United for the most English league titles won by any club.

The decisive match proved to be an exciting spectacle from the outset. Contrary to expectations, it was former Liverpool player Dominic Solanke who opened the scoring for the visitors. However, Liverpool responded emphatically. Luis Diaz quickly equalised just four minutes later, igniting the Anfield faithful. Alexis Mac Allister then put the Reds ahead in the 24th minute with a stunning strike, followed by Cody Gakpo extending the lead in the 34th minute, sending Liverpool into halftime with a comfortable 3-1 advantage.

Mohamed Salah further cemented the victory in the second half. The Egyptian King, enjoying another stellar season at Anfield, scored Liverpool’s fourth goal in the 63rd minute. His goal all but confirmed the title, and in a memorable moment that quickly went viral, Salah celebrated by taking a selfie with fans in the Kop end, later sharing the image on his social media.

Salah makes history

Just six minutes later, Liverpool added a fifth. Pressure from Salah on Destiny Udogie resulted in the Tottenham defender putting the ball into his own net, making it 5-1 and sealing the emphatic victory. Salah’s goal not only contributed to the title win but also maintained his commanding lead in the Golden Boot race, showcasing his continued prolific form. He also surpassed Sergio Aguero to become the highest-scoring international player in Premier League history.

Salah on tactical shift under Slot

Speaking after the match, the 32-year-old forward was asked to compare his role under the new manager, Arne Slot, to his time with Jurgen Klopp. Salah commented, “You can see the numbers. Now I don’t have to defend much. The tactics are quite different. I said ‘as long as you rest me defensively I will provide offensively, so I am glad that I did. He listened a lot and you can see the numbers.” He added, “When you play in the Premier League you have to defend but I said that I can gamble and somehow I can make a difference. My number of assists shows that, you can create chances as well.”

This Premier League title marks Liverpool’s second in five seasons, following their triumph in the 2019-20 campaign, ending a 30-year wait. This victory, celebrated in front of a packed Anfield, held particular significance for the club and its supporters after the previous title win occurred behind closed doors due to the pandemic. The win with four games remaining in the season underscored Liverpool’s dominance in Slot’s impressive inaugural year.
