- 145 grams of tomatoes (or 2 medium to large tomatoes)
- 3 to 4 dried red chillies—halved, seeds removed
- 1 teaspoon chopped garlic (or 4 to 5 medium garlic cloves, chopped)
- 1 Sichuan pepper (timur)—optional
- ¼ teaspoon black peppercorns
- ¼ to ½ teaspoon sugar (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- 3 cups water—for cooking tomatoes
How to Make Momos Chutney
Follow these steps carefully to make the spiciest, most flavourful momos chutney!
- Rinse the tomatoes thoroughly in water. Break the dried red chillies, remove the seeds, and rinse them as well.
- In a pan, heat 3 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
- Once the water is boiling, add the tomatoes and dried red chillies. Let them cook over medium heat.
- Boil uncovered for 8 to 9 minutes, until the tomatoes soften.
- Drain the water using a strainer and allow the tomatoes and chillies to cool to room temperature.
- Once the tomatoes are warm or fully cooled, slice off the top eye of each tomato and peel off the skin.
- Roughly chop or crush them, then transfer them to a blender jar along with their juices. Alternatively, you can crush them with your hands while adding them to the blender.
- Add the dried red chillies, chopped garlic, black peppercorns, and Sichuan pepper to the blender.
- Mix in the sugar and salt according to taste.
- Without adding water, blend everything into a smooth, fine consistency. If you prefer an even smoother texture, you can strain the chutney.
- Transfer the chutney to a bowl and serve it fresh with hot momos!
