New Delhi: Monsoons are coming up soon, the rainy season is usually about excessive hairfall and humidity and even infections like dengue. But for pregnant women, this season is about a lot more, and also about taking extra care with respect to diet. One the one hand, pregnancy diet is of utmost importance for the mother and baby’s wellbeing but it is also about ensuring that one does not eat anything that may result in an infection that may threaten the baby in a long run.

On the one hand, doctors advise against instake of caffeine, too much ginger, papaya and substances such as alcohol, tobacco and drugs. But when it comes to monsoon specifically, gynaecologists recommend the 7 best foods that should be part of the diet.

Foods to eat in monsoon when pregnant

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Sapna Raina, Clinical Lead & Senior Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Narayana Health City, Bangalore, listed the best foods for pregnant women in monsoon.

“Pregnant women should focus on consuming a balanced diet during the monsoon season to ensure both their and their babies’ health. It’s a must to include leafy greens like spinach and kale for essential and minerals, citrus fruits like oranges and lemons for a boost of vitamin C, nuts and seeds for healthy fats and protein, yogurt for probiotics, lean protein sources like chicken and fish for amino acids, whole grains like quinoa and brown rice for sustained energy, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. It is important to cook food thoroughly to avoid any contamination and to wash fruits and vegetables properly before consumption,” said Dr Raina.

Dr Rujul Jhaveri, Consultant Gynealogist, SRCC Children’s Hospital, Mumbai, also spoke about the same.

“During the monsoon season, pregnant women should focus on immune-boosting and easily digestible foods to stay healthy. Expecting mothers should fill their plates with leafy greens, ginger, garlic, yoghurt, citrus fruits, whole grains, and almonds. These food items provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s very important to consume well-cooked meals to avoid infections, maintain regular eating times, and stay hydrated. A balanced routine includes three main meals and two healthy snacks, focusing on nutrient-dense options. Incorporating ginger and garlic aids in digestion and enhance immunity, while yogurt supports gut health. Leafy greens and citrus fruits provide vital nutrients like folic acid and vitamin C. Whole grains and almonds offer sustained energy and essential fats, promoting overall well-being,” added Dr Jhaveri.
