New Delhi: With a slight change in the weather conditions, some regions of north India received light showers a few days back. Well, this was the respite that everyone was eagerly waiting for. According to the Indian Meteorological Department of India (IMD), the weather conditions are likely to remain the same from now, a little cloudy. However, no matter how much respite the rain might bring, it is also likely to bring a spike in waterborne and vector-borne diseases.
In Mumbai, the rain conditions have led to a considerable rise in flu-like diseases. The hospitals in the city, with a major surge in flu cases and vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, as per the report of TOI. Just before the monsoon is going to start, the public health department has issued directives to all the local bodies from the district to the village level to take preventive steps against the outbreak of diseases during the rainy season.
Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai, shared with News9, “During monsoon, the risk of developing serious health complications like typhoid, nausea, diarrhoea, viral fever, and gastro diseases increases. Drinking contaminated water is a major triggering factor behind the development of these diseases. Various bacteria, viruses, dust particles, insects, and germs thrive in the air due to increased moisture during monsoon. This is why the a need to maintain proper hygiene to eliminate the risk of waterborne and airborne diseases. Make sure to always wash your hands before eating or cooking the food to ensure your safety.”
Ways to stay safe from monsoon-driven health conditions
Eating healthy vegetables, fruits, nuts, and lentils can boost your immunity during monsoon when the chances of falling ill are higher.
Avoid roadside food, such as pani puri, sandwiches, cut fruits, fresh fruit juices and ice-laden drinks they are a source of infection in the monsoon season.
Ensure that your diet is well-balanced and contains essential nutrients, healthy fats, minerals, vitamins, carbs, and antioxidants for effective results.
Storing the water for more than a day or two can lead to the breeding of harmful bacteria and insects, which is why individuals are advised to deep clean the water container now and then.
Boiling the water can help evaporate the pollutants and bacteria present in the water, combating health conditions like viral fever, typhoid, and gastrodiseases.
Apply insect repellents on your clothes before stepping out of the house to safeguard yourself from getting bitten by mosquitoes and insects.
Immediately consult your doctor if you start to experience symptoms like mild to severe fever, episodes of vomiting, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fatigue for prompt diagnosis and positive outcomes.
