New Delhi: Although all of North India is currently struggling with a severe heatwave with temperatures to soon touch 50 degrees, monsoons are well awaited by all. Rain and humidity that accompany monsoon are likely to be upon us in no time, but another cause of concern is the seasonal infections that may come along. Heavy rains and floods during the monsoon can contaminate water sources, increasing the risk of infection. But what should one do when these occur?
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Shrey Srivastava, General Physician at Sharda Hospital, listed the commonest monsoon infections that may occur, their symptoms and some preventive measures as well.
Season may increase the growth of fungal infections, rashes, and other skin infections and joint pain.
Some of the symptoms of monsoon illnesses may include:
High fever
Joint and muscle pain
Nausea and vomiting
Sneezing
Sore throat
Coughing
Flu like symptoms
Common cold and flu: flu like symptoms may develop
Vector born diseases:
Dengue and malaria
Typhoid/enteric Fever: spreads through contaminated food and water and is most common in unsanitised and unhygienic places.
Respiratory Infections: Especially people suffering from asthma, this monsoon weather can increase the risk of respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
Cholera: This bacterial infection can spread through contaminated food and water.
Diarrhoea: Contaminated food and water may lead to loose stools.
Preventive Measures:
Ensuring access to clean drinking water and encouraging good hygiene practices like washing hands before eating, and drinking boiled and pure water could reduce the effect of these infections.
People should work together by taking the initiative to keep the environment clean. Don’t allow to lodge water around your place.
Using mosquito repellents, and nets, at home
Should avoid consumption of street food.
