More than 350 residents of DLF apartments in Kochi fell sick due to food poisoning

Ernakulam: In a suspected case of E-coli (a bacteria found in the intestines) contamination in drinking water, over 300 residents, including 25 children, of the 15-tower DLF apartment complex at Kakkanad, Kochi, reported vomiting and diarrhoea and have been admitted in various hospitals in the city. Officials from the health department suspect the presence of E-coli bacteria in the water tank that is bee used by the residents of the flat.

As per residents, nearly all the 1,000 flats in the compound have been affected since May and have been admitted in various hospitals in the city.

Jineesh, a resident who works at Info Park said TV9, “I have been suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea since yesterday. It is being said that the infection is due to E-coli bacteria. Many of my friends have been affected and are seeking treatment now”.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday said that she was informed a day ago by some residents of the DLF apartment complex in Kakkanad that many of the residents have fallen sick and have been admitted to the hospitals suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea.

“I immediately ordered an inspection of the area by health officials and a medical team from Ernakulam visited the apartment complex and examined all their water sources. They also spoke to residents and took a list of the people who fell sick and sought treatment in private hospitals,” she said to the media.

Though flat residents told me that over 700 people fell ill, as per official reports received from the health department, around 340 people sought treatment, and five are hospitalised presently,” the minister said.

The municipal authorities said the results of one round of tests of the water samples taken from the complex on Monday were not available yet.

Meanwhile, the association members say that water contamination may not be the reason for the food poisoning, but it could be because of consumption of food from eateries outside the apartment complex.

Health authorities are in the meantime collecting water samples to ascertain whether it was the water that led to the food poisoning
