Moscow Agrees to Release Indians in Russian Army After PM Raises Issue With Prez Putin: Sources

New Delhi: Russia has decided to release all Indians serving in the Russian Army and will facilitate them after Prime Minster Narendra Modi raised this issue with President Vladimir Putin during his 2-day visit to Moscow, as per sources.

The issue was raised at a private dinner between the leaders of the two countries hosted by Putin last evening.

The concerns rose after two Indians serving in the Russian army were killed during the ongoing war in Ukraine. Several dozens continue to be stuck in the war zone claiming that they were ticked into taking up the fighting role.

Earlier this year, a video went viral showing a group of men from Punjab and Haryana wearing army uniforms asking for help to return to India- claiming that they were tricked into fighting ther war.

Following this the government said that they are “strongly” taking the matter up with the Russian authorities and working on their discharge as soon as possible.

During this, the Indian probe agencies carried out raids at several locations and busted a ring allegedly involved in trafficking Indians to Russia. In these raids, it emerged that these firms sent as many as 35 Indians to Russia, though an official said it was not clear if all of them were ‘forced to fight in the war.’

PM Modi in Russia

The recent 2-day visit to Moscow makes the Prime Minister the first international bilateral meet. PM Modi landed in Moscow on Monday, July 8, where he was received by Putin in Novo-Ogarevo.

President Putin told the Prime Minister, “Esteemed Prime Minister! Dear friend! Good afternoon again, I am very glad to see you. We will have official conversations tomorrow, but today, in this homely environment, we can calmly talk about probably the same issues – but unofficially.”

During the private meeting, the Russian counterpart said, “You have dedicated your entire life to serving the Indian people, and people feel it,” to which PM Modi said, ” “You are right, I have only one goal – my country, the people of India.”
