Dhoni to play next IPL season as uncapped player?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have already announced the retention rules ahead of the IPL mega-auction. The franchises are allowed to retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped and two uncapped players.

The League’s Governing Council also re-introduced the uncapped players rule ahead of the next season. The rule was earlier scrapped by the BCCI in 2021. As per the uncapped player rule, an Indian cricketer, who hasn’t played any international match for more than five years and doesn’t have a central contract with BCCI will be termed as an uncapped player.

“A capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian Players only” said BCCI in a press release.

Dhoni played his last international match for India on July 10 during the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. He led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to five IPL titles and two Champions League trophies. He also scored 5118 runs for CSK 258 IPL matches.
