New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the retention rules ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction on Saturday, September 28. The League’s Governing Council announced new player regulations with the franchises allowed to retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players, through retention or the Right to Match card (RTM).
Dhoni played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the beginning of the tournament and has won five IPL titles and two Champions League titles with the franchise. He has played 258 matches for CSK and scored 5118 runs at a strike rate of 139.45.
Dhoni to play for CSK in IPL 2025?
The BCCI also revealed that the IPL is re-introducing the uncapped players rule ahead of the next season. The rule was earlier scrapped by the board in 2021. According to the rule, an Indian cricketer, who hasn’t played International cricket for more than five years and doesn’t have a BCCI central contract will be termed as an uncapped player. This rule will allow CSK to retain MS Dhoni for INR 4 Crore which is the price of an uncapped player.
“A capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian Players only” reads Rule No. 7 in the official release published by the BCCI.
Dhoni played his last international game for India on July 10 during the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. Ever Since Dhoni’s last match for CSK, there have been many speculations about his IPL future. He failed to take his team over the line in the last league stage match against RCB and looked very angry after the match. With the uncapped player rule back in the IPL, CSK fans would hope that Dhoni comes back to play one more season in the Yellow jersey.
The IPL governing council re-introduced the uncapped player rule for the next season and fans might see Dhoni playing in the 2025 season of the tournament. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
