The crescent moon marking the beginning of Muharram was not sighted in Saudi Arabia on the evening of July 5, 2024, the 29th day of the Dhul Hijjah month. As a result, Saudi authorities announced that the first day of Muharram 1446 will begin after evening prayers on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
According to the Gregorian calendar, July 7, 2024, will be recognised as the first day of Muharram in Saudi Arabia, marking the start of the Islamic New Year 1446.

The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle or moon phases. After its meeting at Nakhoda Masjid on Saturday, July 6, the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee unanimously announced that the first day of Muharram-Ul-Haram will commence on Monday, July 8, as the moon was not sighted on July 6. Therefore, Muslims in India will celebrate Muharram on July 8, 2024.
