New Delhi: Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has pulled out of the Abu Dhabi Open after she failed to make the main draw cut at the event. Osaka’s return has been further delayed after pulling out midway of the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open 2025. The Japanese tennis star pulled her name out of the Abu Dhabi alternates list after the tennis player was signed up for next week’s WTA 500 tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

Since Osaka failed to make the main draw cut, she would have either needed to play in the qualifying or hoped to sneak into the main draw with player withdrawals. Since her name was removed from the alternates list, she will take some more time to make her return from an abdominal injury in Abu Dhabi. Last year, Osaka made her debut at the Abu Dhabi Open when she lost to Danielle Collins in the first round.

Osaka’s injury concerns at the beginning of the year

After a heartbreak at the starting of the year, where she was forced to retire at the Auckland Open final, Osaka, who’s a four-time Grand Slam champion, was able to compete at the Australian Open Grand Slam. She began the Australian Open on a winning note claiming her opening two matches but fate had something else for her as she had to retire injured in her third-round match against Belinda Bencic.

It will be interesting to see if the Japanese tennis player makes a comeback on court anytime soon or she will take some extra time. After the Australian Open exit, the Japanese sensation said that: ‘I mean, it was a little hectic trying to manage it because obviously my draw was quite tough. It was, I guess, a little inevitable, but I think the competitor in me just wanted to see it through to the end,”. Naomi Osaka is a two-time Australian Open winner.
