National Alligator Day: Where do alligators live in the world?

New Delhi: Our planet Earth has a special quality that no other planet has. It is a beautiful home that not only ensures the abode to human beings but to several other living creatures. It ensures motherly care to every living being with no differences and that is why it is termed Mother Earth. As humans are the dominant creatures on the planet, several activities and their rising needs have turned out to be problems for several other creatures on the planet. Some creatures have even reached the verge of extinction, while others are facing great threats to their populations. Alligators are one of those living creatures that are facing threats to their population. Thus, to raise awareness about alligators and their crucial role in Florida ecosystem, May 29 is annually observed as National Alligator Day. Additionally, the day also provides an opportunity to educate people about the history and other interesting facts about these ancient creatures.

Alligators living on the planet even before the beginning of humans

It is believed that the alligators have been venturing on the planet earth for over 35 million years. They are one of the crucial part of the ecosystem and thus people need to protect them to maintain ecological balance on the planet. This year, the day is being observed on Wednesday. Where do most alligators live on this planet?

Very few people across the globe are aware that the alligators are endemic to two countries, namely the United States and China. Most alligators thrive in Florida’s swamplands and North Carolina’s wetlands. Additionally, a large population of gators, alligators, can also be witnessed along the Gulf coast.

Though they are endemic to two countries, that does not mean that one cannot spot the creature in other parts of the globe. Apart from their ancestral home, the creature can also be witnessed in several countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal, and India.

American and the Chinese alligators

American alligator are freshwater creatures and have diverse habitats. They live in streams, swamps, and rivers. Sometimes, you can also spot them in ponds and rivers.

On the other hand, Chinese alligators have a smaller habitat than American ones and are mostly found in the lower Yangtze River basin on the central Pacific coast. Like their American counterparts, the Chinese alligators can also be found in swamps and other wetlands.

The status of their population in these two countries is extremely different, like in the in the north and south poles. While the United States has a great number, with two million wild gators in Louisiana, around 1.3 million in Florida, around 400,000 to 500,000 alligators in Texas, around 2,00,000 to 2,50,000 gators in Georgia, and 100,000 alligators in South Carolina.

On the other hand, the creature is facing a great threat to its life in China and has been listed as an endangered species. If experts are to be believed only around 150 alligators are eft in the wild. However, scientists have indicated a positive growth in the numbers of alligators.
