Navy Day 2024: Why is the day observed on December 4?

Navy Day in India is celebrated to honour the actions of the Indian Navy, especially Operation Trident, during the India-Pakistan War on December 4, 1971. This operation involved an attack on the Karachi harbour by Indian Naval Missile boats. Indian sailors communicated in Russian during this mission to avoid detection, and no Indian sailors were killed.

Initially, Navy Day began on October 21, 1944, when the Royal Indian Navy celebrated it for the first time. It originally coincided with the Royal Navy’s Trafalgar Day. The goal was to raise public awareness about the Navy. In its early years, there were parades in various port cities and public meetings at naval bases. From 1945 onward, Navy Day was celebrated on December 1.

On November 30, 1945, the night before Navy Day, Indian ratings painted slogans like “Inqualab Zindabad”. Due to popular enthusiasm, Navy Day was later celebrated on December 15 until 1972. The week containing this date was marked as Navy Week.

In May 1972, a conference decided to move Navy Day to December 4 to recognise the Navy’s actions in the 1971 war. Navy Week is now observed from December 1 to 7.

Importance of the day

Indian Naval Day celebrates the Dayicers of the Navy who help protect our coastlines. It recognises the bravery of those facing challenges while ensuring our nation’s maritime security. The Indian Navy plays a key role in keeping the Indian Ocean peaceful, allowing safe global trade through this important area, and fostering cooperation between countries at sea.

Indian Navy Day commemorates the Indian Navy’s achievements, particularly Operation Trident during the 1971 war. The day honours naval personnel and highlights the Navy’s crucial role in maintaining maritime security and fostering international cooperation in the Indian Ocean.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
