New Delhi: India’s Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra will kick off his campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday, August 06. Neeraj will begin his title defence at the Games in the qualifying round of the men’s javelin throw. The reigning Olympic and world champion will be hoping to grab the top spot in the qualifying round where he will be placed in Group B.
Alongside Neeraj, his Indian compatriot Kishore Jena will also begin his campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 by taking part in the qualification round. Neeraj will have to register a throw of 84m in three attempts or finish among the top 12 throwers in the qualification round to secure his spot in the men’s javelin throw final in Paris.
The qualifying round will take place at the Stad de France in Paris where a total of 32 athletes will be in action. The 32 athletes have been divided into two groups of 16 each. Germany’s Max Dehning, who is the only athlete to have thrown over 90m this season will be part of Neeraj’s group alongside Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan.
Nadeem is heading into the Paris Olympics 2024 having missed a majority of the season due to injuries. But the World Championships silver medallist is looking in great shape ahead of the qualifying round and will be hoping to grab a podium finish in the final. Neeraj’s Indian teammate Jena will be part of Group A and will be competing with Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, who is a strong medal contender.
At Tokyo 2020, Neeraj had qualified for the men’s javelin final with his very first throw in the qualifying round. In the final, his first throw of 87.03m was enough to secure him his maiden Olympic gold medal. Neeraj scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win an individual gold medal in athletics at the Olympics. He will be once again hoping to produce his best throw in his first attempt during the qualifying round on Tuesday.
