New Delhi: Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah believes this might finally be his year to clinch his maiden Ballon d’Or after a phenomenal season with the club. Salah, who has been one of Liverpool’s best performers ever since joining the club in 2017, played a key role in helping Arne Slot’s men win the Premier League 2024-25 title.
The Egyptian forward feels this year might be his ‘best’ chance at winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or, which is awarded to the best footballer of the year. Salah, who signed a two-year contract extension at Liverpool last month, is currently the leading goal-scorer in the Premier League 2024-25 with 28 goals and 18 assists in 37 appearances in the league.
Salah also scored three goals for Liverpool in the Champions League and produced two assists, but failed to inspire them to the knockout stage. Liverpool lost to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on penalties in the Round of 16 to crash out of the Champions League, but went on to win their second Premier League title, and 20th English top-flight crown, overall after their convincing 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Salah, who is one of the top contenders to win the Ballon d’Or this season, recently opened up on his chances of lifting the prestigious crown. The Liverpool forward said he has not had a season like the current one in his career so far and is hopeful his heroics might be enough to help them win his maiden Ballon d’Or.
“I would say I never had a season like this and winning big trophies so I would say this is my best chance to get it right now while I’m in the club because it’s been a crazy year, a crazy season with a trophy. It’s given me a good chance,” Salah said on Sky Sports.
Who are the other contenders to win Ballon d’Or this year?
While Salah is arguably one of the top five contenders to win the Ballon d’Or this year after firing Liverpool to the Premier League title, the Egyptian forward will have to fend off competition from the likes of Lamine Yamal, Ousmane Dembele and Raphinha, among others.
Both Yamal and Raphina have played a key role in helping Barcelona win the La Liga title this season, while Dembele has enjoyed a sensational campaign for PSG, helping them win Ligue 1 and make it to the Champions League final. Dembele will become the overwhelming favourite to win the prestigious award if he manages to help PSG lift the Champions League after the final against Inter Milan next month.
