New National Bank Numbers to fight fraud: Banks plan for unique phone numbers

New Delhi: Nowadays, people are troubled by many promotional and telemarketing calls ranging from credit cards to loans. Meanwhile, if the bank has a number that everyone can recognise, then fake calls and other promotional calls could be reduced to some extent. Actually, banks in the country may soon get a separate number series. It would be the national calling number of banks. Thereby, making it easier for customers to understand whether or not the call or message is coming from the bank. The proposed new mechanism for a new number could help in preventing cyber financial frauds.

As reported by The Economic Times, banks currently operate outbound-only number with the 1600xx series that do not have an incoming call facility. Banks have proposed that they get new individual calling numbers along with incoming call facilities.

“A national number for each bank, and also allowing inbound calls to such numbers, would further enhance customer security and experience,” as quoted by one industry executive to the ET.

New National number for each bank: RBI’s role

Banks are in talks with the Reserve Bank of India and the Government, and are expecting a positive outcome out of the deliberations in a shorter span of time.

RBI had, earlier, issued a circular in January and directed all banks to use only the 1600xx series whenever a customer has to make a transaction-related call. Whereas 140xx series was fixed for promotional calls

According to the report, banks have demanded that there should be clearer guidelines on the use of 1600xx numbers, such as allowing incoming calls on these numbers and giving some relaxation to customers who have given their consent to be contacted by the bank.

Indian banks are pushing for unique national phone numbers to combat fraudulent calls and improve customer experience. Currently, banks use outbound-only 1600xx numbers, limiting interaction. The proposed system would allow inbound calls, enhancing security and clarifying communication.  Biz News Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
