Mumbai: Nirjala Ekadashi, an important Hindu holy day occurring on the 11th lunar day of the waxing phase in the month of Jyeshtha, is known for its rigorous waterless fast, considered the most austere and sacred among the 24 Ekadashi. This year, Nirjala Ekadashi falls on June 18, 2024. It is also called ‘Pandava Bhima Ekadashi,’ ‘Jyestha Shukla Ekadashi,’ and ‘Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi.’
The history of Nirjala Ekadashi stems from Bhima, the mighty Pandava prince from the Mahabharata, known for his love of food. Unable to observe regular ekadashi fasts due to his appetite, Bhima sought advice from Sage Vyasa, who recommended observing Nirjala Ekadashi once a year to gain the virtues of all 24 Ekadashi.
According to Hindu scriptures like the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Markandeya Purana, and Vishnu Purana, observing Nirjala Ekadashi is believed to cleanse sins and grant blessings from Lord Vishnu. Devotees gain merits equivalent to observing all Ekadashis of the year, and it is particularly revered among Vaishnavas.
The fast is said to bestow happiness, prosperity, and forgiveness of sins, and is believed to lead towards longevity and moksha (salvation). Observers are believed to be spared from Yama’s judgment after death and taken to Vishnu’s abode, Vaikuntha.
