New Delhi: Among the many gruesome tales of spine-chilling serial killings in India, the Nithari serial murders hold a special place for its ghastly nature which shocked the entire nature and also beyond the borders. The case was laced with shrieks of innocent children and blood. The murders took place in the house of Moninder Singh Pandher, a businessman who lived in Noida’s Sector-31 near Nithari village in Uttar Pradesh. The horrid activities occurred between 2005 and 2006 and has been etched in the criminal history of India.
The Nithari serial killings: When India was rocked by brutal murders
In the Nithari serial killings, children and young women were sexually assaulted and murdered. In 2005 and through 2006, it was noticed that many children and young women went missing from Nithari’s poor families. While the concerned families tried to file an official report, the police did not pay much attention to the case at first. Then in December 2006, two residents of Nithari village reported about knowing the location of the remains of the missing children. They pinpointed house D5 at Noida’s Sector-31 as the location.
While the police and local authorities ignored them at first, the villagers were determined to expose the serial killings. They contacted Resident Welfare Association (RWA) President S C Mishra and a decomposed a hand was found there. The villagers contacted the police again, who, after much hesitation, decided to investigate the matter and search the D5 house. The house belonged to Moninder Singh Pandher, a wealthy businessman where he used to live with his servant Surinder Koli. The police found the remains of missing children from the premises of the house, which sent the entire nation into a frenzy, forcing even the Indian government to sit up and take notice of the case.
The investigation and confession
As the investigation progressed, Moninder Singh Pandher was branded as the co-accused even though many considered him to be the main man behind the killings. According to reports, it was in his house where reportedly the rape, killings and mutilations of 16 children and many young women took place. A wealthy businessman, Pandher reportedly indulged in the heinous crimes in the absence of his wife. As per CBI, it was his servant Surinder Koli who used to bring the children and women home to rape and murder them. Koli reportedly confessed that he loved consuming human flesh.
The shock acquittal
Much to the shock of everyone, on October 16, 2023, Pandher and Koli were acquitted of all charges against them after they filed appeals. The Allahabad High Court acquitted both of them due to a lack of convincing evidence other than the confessions of the accused. The verdict baffled the families of the victims who were hoping for justice. Due to their financial struggles, those families could not continue fighting the case.
