Charlie Dent, a former Republican Congressman, has issued a stern warning to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle regarding their involvement in U.S. politics. Dent, who represented Pennsylvania’s 15th district from 2005 to 2018, expressed concern that their political endorsements could backfire in the current highly polarized climate.
In an interview with GB News, Dent advised the Sussexes to remain neutral. He pointed out that celebrity endorsements, including those from figures like Harry and Meghan, may not hold as much sway as some believe. “I really don’t think most Americans sit up at night worrying what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have to say about American politics,” Dent said.
He contrasted the current situation with historical practices in the UK, where royal figures traditionally avoid political involvement. “Even in the UK, where royals are expected to stay out of politics, they don’t always succeed,” Dent observed. He suggested that, despite their prominence, Harry and Meghan’s views on U.S. politics might not resonate with the American public.
Dent also highlighted the potential risks of political endorsements in a divided country. “In a polarized country, it’s not always the smartest thing to take sides,” he cautioned. He noted that such endorsements could alienate large segments of the population and damage the public image of those involved.
Addressing the business implications, Dent recommended that Harry and Meghan should consider a more reserved approach. “My advice would be to be somewhat circumspect,” Dent advised. “Their popularity in the UK has declined, and they should be cautious not to make moves that could affect their standing in the U.S. as well.”
Harry and Meghan notably did not join A-listers at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week, but they have always been outspoken about US politics.
