No pay cut for Pakistan cricketers but PCB reduce duration of central contracts

New Delhi: The Pakistan Cricket Board has resisted plans of reducing playment of players but decided to reduce duration of its central contracts from three years to one.

At a meeting in Lahore, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi took measures to overhaul its policies following a disastrous T20 World Cup campaign.

Pakistan’s new red-ball coach Jason Gillespie, white-ball coach Gary Kirsten, assistant coach Azhar Mahmood, selectors Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq, and other top officials attended the meeting.

Pakistan failed to get out of the group stage in the T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean last month, leading to widespread criticism and reports of dressing room unrest and a fractured team.

It forced Naqvi to promise undertaking stern measures including review of the captainy of Babar Azam, who was reinstated as leader at the cost of Shaheen Shah Afridi.

“The selectors have recommended no change in the financial part of the central contracts which would now be revised into 12-month contracts with players fitness, behaviour and form all to be assessed every 12 months,” a PCB official told PTI.

Under Naqvi’s predecessor Zaka Ashraf, the PCB last year had agreed to issue central contracts with no alteration in agreement clauses and financials for three years.

But now the board has made it mandatory for all contracted players to go through fitness tests every three months under the supervision of Kirsten and Gillespie.

Fitness and availability of players for the national team would be kept in mind while issuing no objection certificates for playing in franchise T20 leagues abroad.

“Only (those) players with a high fitness and performance criteria will receive NOCs, ensuring a high standard of representation in international leagues,” the official added.

Players would also have to play in domestic matches mandatorily and a zero tolerance policy would be maintained on disciplinary cases to prevent formation of groups within the team.
