New Delhi: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently named his favourite tennis player among the current crop of youngsters as he opened up on his love for the game. Gates, a long-time tennis fan, has been actively following the sport and tries to keep up with the latest happenings. The tech billionaire picked 3-time Grand Slam winner Janik Sinner as his favourite over Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner recently completed a successful title defence in Melbourne to bag his second consecutive Australian Open title. The 23-year-old Italian defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev comfortably in straight sets in the final to bag the Australian Open 2025 title. Sinner became the first player since Rafael Nadal to successfully defend his maiden Grand Slam title.
Speaking about his admiration for Sinner, Gates, who is one of the richest persons in the world with an estimated net worth of $160 billion, said he likes the Italian tennis star’s composure and his positive attitude.
“Sinner is unbelievable, among the young players he’s my favourite, he’s always so calm. Always positive. Really a star,” Gates said on an Italian TV channel.

Janik Sinner’s phenomenal start to 2025
Sinner enjoyed a phenomenal run at the Australian Open 2025 last month on his way to lifting the title. The 23-year-old also became the first Italian player to win three Grand Slams. It was also his second major title after getting embroiled in a doping controversy. Sinner brushed aside doping concerns in Melbourne to produce a clinical show and win his second consecutive Australian Open crown.
The Italian has enjoyed an impressive run since the start of 2024 as he has won three Grand Slams in the last 12 months. He is currently ranked no.1 in the world and will be looking to continue his fine form in the upcoming majors. While he has been excellent on the court, Sinner continues to face the threat of a long-term ban from WADA and is set to face a critical hearing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in April this year.
Sinner skipped Rotterdam Open 2025 where Alcaraz recently defeated Alex de Minaur in the final to capture his maiden indoor court title. The world no.1 is expected to feature in the Qatar Open in Doha next which is set to get underway on February 17th.
