New Delhi: David Miller has clarified that he hasn’t called time on his T20I career, insisting he is looking forward to playing for South Africa.
Miller was part of the Protean team that lost to India by seven runs in the final of the T20 World Cup. It kept South Africa still searching for their first major ICC trophy.
The 35-year-old was dismissed in the last over of the match as South Africa needed 16 runs to win in chase of a 177-run target in Breidgetown, Barbados.
After the match, a heartbroken Miller wept on the ground and was consoled by his partner at Kensington Oval. Later reports suggested the left handed batter had announced his retirment from T20Is.
But the big-hitting middle order batter ended wrote on social media that he is available to play for South Africa in the 20-over format.
“Contrary to reports, I have not retired from T20 international cricket. I will continue to be available for the Proteas. The best is yet to come,” Miller wrote in his Instagram story.
In a tense run chase, South Africa banked on Miller to take them home after he had put together a solid partnership with Heinrich Klaasen.
They took SA to touching distance of the win as their requirement reduced to run a ball 30 runs but once Klaasen was dismissed, things started to turn in India’s favour.
He was kept off strike which increased their requirement to 16 runs from six balls. Having a well-earned reputation of being a ‘finisher’, South pinned their hopes in Miller.
But he was caught on the ling off boundary while trying to lift the first ball from Hardik Pandya for a six. He hit the wide and low full-toss high but Suryakumar Yadav produced a superb juggling catch on the boundary, flicking the ball into play to dismiss Miller for 21 runs off 17 balls and dent SA.
