Not Rohan Jaitley! GCA top official frontrunner to replace Jay Shah as BCCI secretary

New Delhi: Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) secretary Anil Patel has reportedly pipped Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) to emerge as the frontrunner for the post of the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Jay Shah. Shah is set to take over as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in December this year and will thus step down from his post as the secretary of the BCCI.

Shah was elected unopposed as the new ICC chairman earlier this year and is set to become the youngest chairman in the history of the world cricket’s governing body. The names of Jaitley, who is the son of late Arun Jaitley and Patel have been doing the rounds for the post of BCCI secretary after Shah’s departure. However, as per a report in PTI, Patel has emerged as the frontrunner for the top post.

As per the report, a discussion and a final decision on who will replace Shah as BCCI secretary is expected to be taken at BCCI’s Special General Meeting (SGM), the date for which will be announced after the board’s 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is set to take place in Bengaluru on Sunday, September 28.

Finding successor to Jay Shah as BCCI secretary not on agenda in BCCI AGM

As per PTI, finding a successor to Shah as the next BCCI secretary is not on the agenda at BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday. The primary focus will be on deciding who will be India’s representatives to ICC meetings after Shah assumes office as the ICC chairman. Current Shah and BCCI president Roger Binny represent BCCI at ICC meetings.

Shah was elected as BCCI’s representative to ICC meetings after former India captain Sourav Ganguly stepped down from the post of BCCI president. Shah has mostly represented India in ICC meetings with Binny seldom performing the duties. During Saturday’s AGM, a decision is expected on who will represent BCCI in the global body’s meetings going forward.

Binny has a year left in his tenure as the BCCI president and a decision will be taken on whether he will continue being the Alternate Director to represent the Indian board in ICC meetings or if someone else will be designated for the role. Meanwhile, despite Shah’s replacement as BCCI secretary not being on the agenda in the AGM, the members of the BCCI are expected to discuss among themselves the future successor.

The appointment of BCCI representatives to ICC meetings is crucial as the global body has scheduled a conclave in Dubai which will take place following the conclusion of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 which gets underway next month. The conclave is scheduled to take place on October 20. Shah will still be the BCCI secretary at the time as he will begin his tenure as ICC chairman only on December 01.

Rohan Jaitley’s name has been doing the round for the post of BCCI secretary after Jay Shah’s elevation to ICC chairman. However, a top GCA official is reportedly the frontrunner for the post of BCCI secretary after Shah.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
