New Delhi: Following the Football Association’s successful argument that the Nottingham Forest owner had engaged in “flagrant display of disrespectful behaviour” by spitting over the match officials, Evangelos Marinakis was given a five-match suspension. An independent regulatory tribunal found Marinakis guilty of illegal conduct following Forest’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Fulham at the City Ground last month. However, the Nottingham owner eventually rejected the charge and refused to take the responsibility.
The home team was incensed at referee Josh Smith after he denied two Forest demands for their own penalty kicks and gave Fulham a penalty on the recommendation of VAR John Brooks.

Marinakis purposefully spat on the ground as the referee passed him “in a disrespectful and disgusting display of contempt,” the FA acknowledged in its written reasons for the penalty, confirming the independent commission’s findings. The Greek billionaire said the occurrence was accidental and that he was just getting rid of phlegm from his cigar habit.
“He felt a cough coming as the officials approached and coughed on the floor, down, and to his right, which was away from the path the officials were taking,” according to his witness statement. He didn’t talk to the authorities.
Appaently, he can’t recall if he ever spat anything out, but if he did, it was definitely not directed toward the referee’s feet and didn’t touch anyone. He doesn’t dispute that some people may have done that. He doesn’t understand why coughing toward the ground in a busy tunnel is wrong, even though anyone can produce phlegm or spit.

Coughing was not mentioned in any of the authorities’ testimony, and CCTV footage of the tunnel supported this claim, thus the panel dismissed it as “completely implausible.” It was described as “an egregious display of disrespectful behavior such as this fuels disrespect towards match officials” by Dominic Adamson, KC.
Referee Smith made the following statement: “Mr. Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest, was standing on my left-hand side at the end of the tunnel as I walked down the tunnel at the end of the match.” He spat on the floor next to my left foot as I passed him.
“Mr. Marinakis was standing at the top of the tunnel, on our left-hand side,” assistant referee James Mainwaring continued. Although he remained silent, he spat on the ground in front of us as we got closer. Adamson, who reviewed the evidence with Bradley Pritchard and Mick Kearns, concluded that Marinakis “deliberately spat in a disrespectful and disgusting display of contempt towards the match officials” and “it clearly amounts to misconduct” within FA rules.
