New Delhi: History will be on the line when Novak Djokovic takes on Carlos Alcaraz in the highly-anticipated men’s singles final at Wimbledon 2024 on Sunday, July 14. 37-year-old Djokovic will be eyeing a record 25th Grand Slam which will see him surpass Australian Margaret Court to become the player with the most singles majors in tennis history.
Djokovic, who underwent knee surgery just three weeks before the start of Wimbledon 2024, hasn’t looked rusty at all in what has been a phenomenal campaign for him in the tournament so far. The Serb now stands just one win away from taking the crown and rewriting tennis history. The Wimbledon 2024 final between Djokovic and Alcaraz will be a repeat of the 2023 final where the Spaniard emerged victorious in a thrilling clash which lasted 4 hours and 42 minutes.
Alcaraz has once again looked unstoppable this year and will be looking to hand Djokovic his only third defeat in his 10th Wimbledon final. But there will be no dearth of motivation for Djokovic, who has not received the best of receptions from fans at the centre court this year and has continuously accused a group of them for booing him.
25th Grand Slam in sight
Djokovic is already the most successful male player in tennis history with a stunning 24 Grand Slam singles titles under his belt. His closest rival Rafael Nadal is still a couple of majors behind him with injuries plaguing his career. Djokovic will be hoping to establish his legacy as the greatest of all time with a 25th Grand Slam triumph in the Wimbledon 2024 final on Sunday.
He is currently tied with Court (24) on the list of players with the most singles Grand Slam titles in tennis history and a win against Alcaraz on Sunday will elevate his status as the undisputed champion. Djokovic will become the first to secure an elusive 25th Grand Slam title, a feat that is unlikely to be challenged anytime soon.
Djokovic eyes Federer’s record
The 24-time Grand Slam champion will also be looking to equal Roger Federer’s all-time record of eight Wimbledon titles in men’s singles. Djokovic has won the Wimbledon seven times in the nine finals that he has been part of the competition. He will be looking to avenge his defeat against Alcaraz in last year’s final and go on level terms with Federer for the most Wimbledon titles won by a male player.
