New Delhi: Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik’s memoir is set to be released in October this year. The book will cover about the Haryana wrestler’s moments from highs to lows. The journey is said to be ‘honest account of her life’ where the incidents about her childhood, introduction to wrestling in her native Rohtak and podium finish in 2016 Olympic Games are mentioned.
The Indian wrestler, who retired from professional wrestling in December last year, also includes her fight against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). She also promises to take her followers through her personal struggles and how she battled injuries during her sporting career.
The book is titled as ‘Witnessed’ and is co-authored by sports journalist Jonathan Selvaraj. The memoir will be published by Juggernaut Books, a digital book publishing house headquartered in New Delhi.
“It’s a really honest account of my life – the highs, lows, and everything in between. I gave this book my all and I hope readers like it,” says Malik of her literary venture, as quoted by news agency PTI.
“It not only talks about her struggles with the Wrestling Foundation of India but also brings vividly alive her childhood, the world of wrestling and what it takes to be an Olympic medalist. We are extremely proud to be publishing this milestone book,” she added.
According to Chiki Sarkar, publisher of Juggernaut Books, “Witness” is “one of the great memoirs of our time – Sakshi has written a no-holds barred book”.
Sakshi Malik’s fight against WFI
Sakshi Malik along with top Indian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia led a sit-in protest on the streets of Jantar Mantar in Delhi against the then WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with the key demand of investigations against him with allegations of sexual harassment of female wrestlers levelled by the wrestlers (which was later lodged in Delhi Police’s FIR). The protests went on for more than seven months in two phases, leading sports ministry to hold fresh elections of the national federation.
The 31-year-old Sakshi decided to quit wrestling after Sanjay Singh, a close aide of Brij Bhushan, won the WFI elections and was elected as the president of the sports body. In March this year, the former Indian grappler ruled out any possibility of her return on a professional mat. She said the fight against Brij Bhushan had left her tormented.
