New Delhi: Olympic medal winning boxer Vijender Singh’s father Mahipal Singh passed away on Thursday, January 02. Vijender’s father was not keeping well for the past few weeks due to illness and was bed ridden. The 39-year-old boxer, who bagged a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Games, took to social media site X to inform about his father’s death.
In the post, Vijender wrote that his father’s last rites would be performed at his parental village Bhiwani in Haryana, also requesting everyone to keep him in their thoughts and prayers. Mahipal, who was employed as a driver with Haryana Roadways, supported Vijender’s dream by working overtime. The boxer was also said to be very close with his father.
It is with the deepest grief and sadness, we inform the passing away of my father Shri Mahipal Singh. He left for his heavenly abode today. Vijender Singh’s career
Vijender, who was born in a poor family in Haryana, became the first-ever Indian boxer to have won a medal the Olympics. The ace Indian boxer starter his training at the Bhiwani Boxing Club located in Bhiwani and went on to become one of the most celebrated members of the boxing club. Vijender first came into the limelight at the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia, where he bagged a bronze medal.
In the same year, he also won another bronze medal at the Asian Games held in Doha participating in the middleweight category. After becoming the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, Vijender showcased his class and bagged a gold medal at the Commonwealth Boxing Championship held in 2010 in New Delhi. At the London Olympics in 2012, he reached the quarterfinals but could not earn any medal.
