New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar, widely regarded as the “God of Cricket”, has numerous records credited to his name and has been a fan favourite over the years for his batting class and temperament while taking on any opposition. Having bid adieu to international cricket in 2013, Sachin played his last game of cricket against West Indies, which was a Test match at his favourite and homely Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
As the calendar turns to November 14, 2024 (Thursday), the day marks 11 complete years of Tendulkar retiring from international cricket. It was an emotional and a roller coaster ride for him and his fans alike who were present on the stands of Wankhede to witness the Master Blaster bat for one final time in cricket. At that point, he had already bid farewell to ODIs (in 2012) and had only played a single T20I game in his career (in 2006).
Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 14, 2013, was brimming with emotions when the home crowd saw their local boy Sachin climb down the stairs of the pavillion to walk out to the ground and play his last innings of cricket. It was the second Test against West Indies and when India turned to bat after West Indies’ innings on Day 1 itself, Sachin came to bat at no. 4 and remained unbeaten for his side on 38 at stumps.
He continued his innings the next day and could score 74 off 118 deliveries laced with 12 fours before he was dismissed by Narsingh Deonarine with the help of Darren Sammy. India eventually won the Test by an innings and 126 runs and clinched the Test series 2-0.

Sachin’s prime time came in Test and ODI cricket in which he has 100 centuries combined – 51 in the former and 49 in the latter, which is a record still unbeaten and will remain so in the time to come. In 200 Tests for India, Sachin amassed 15,921 runs at a brilliant average of 53.79. He represented India in 463 ODIs in which he accumulated 18,426 runs, averaging 44.83.

The iconic picture of Sachin walking out to bat for the last time in his international career was named the 2013 MCC-Wisden Photo of the Year. The picture was taken by photographer Atul Kamble as he perfectly captured the crazy fans capturing and looking up to their hero Sachin who was coming out of the dressing room and was gloving up as he walked down the stairs to bat for one last time in cricket.
