New Delhi: Merseyside Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly drove a car into pedestrians during Liverpool FC’s victory parade on Sunday.

Over 50 people were injured when a car rammed into a crowd assembled at Water Street in the centre of Liverpool city minuted after the parade came to an end.

Police said that a 53-year-old white British man, hailing from West Derby, who is believed to be the driver, has been taken into custody on suspicion of arrested murder, driving while unfit after consumption of drugs and dangerous driving, reports ESPN.

Those injured received treatments at hospitals and of these 11 still remain admitted but are reported to be in stable condition and responding to treatment.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims addressed a press conference on Tuesday and informed the police thinks that the car could access part of the road as the block had been temporarily lifted for an ambulance crew to attend an individual with a suspected heart attack.

Sims also praised emergency services personnel who rushed towards the dangerous situation and reached the scene within seconds of the incident.

After initial probe, the police has decided not to treat the incident as an act of terrorism. Sims added that the police are now not looking at other suspects and are yet to identify the arrested.

Police say there was no intelligence that an incident of this nature would take place, and it is not being treated as terrorism. Police are not looking for other suspects and have not identified the nabbed driver.

“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.

“I’m being kept updated on development and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate,” Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, wrote on social media.

“Everyone at the Premier League is shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool this evening, and our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected.

“We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident,” the EPL said in a press release.

Former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp also reacted, saying: “My family and I are shocked and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You’ll never walk alone.”
